What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin disorder that typically affects the center of the face, specifically the nose and cheeks. The skin disorder usually causes a chronic redness in the face, but it may also cause pimples and blisters like acne. People with rosacea may experience skin flushing, visible blood vessels on the face, and occasional burning or stinging sensations.

Rosacea is quite common in people with fair skin, occurring in as many as one in 10 people with light-toned skin. It affects women more often than men, and usually affects people over the age of 30. It is not clear what causes rosacea, but there are several treatments for the skin disorder.

People with rosacea can take several steps to help minimize flushing and discomfort. The first step is to identify your own triggers, when possible. Once you determine your triggers, you can take steps to avoid them.

What are the symptoms of Rosacea?

People have reported specific triggers of flushing including:

• Extreme temperatures, either hot or cold • Direct sunlight • Spicy foods • Alcohol • Intense exercise • Emotional stress • Hot flashes (e.g. menopause)

What can I do about it?

Patients should only use gentle cleansers and moisturizers. In fact, skin moisturizers may help reduce flare-ups and discomfort.

Because the skin is sensitive, people with rosacea often have trouble with many cosmetics. This can be particularly troubling for women who wish to use concealing makeup to cover their red skin, but cannot tolerate the makeup itself. Specific makeup products are available that are non-irritating and can help minimize the appearance of certain types of rosacea.

Laser and intense-pulsed light therapy is an option for people who want specific treatment for rosacea. Laser skin treatments can reduce redness and eliminate small blood vessels on the face called telangiectasias. Laser light therapy may also be able to help with the acne-like blisters (pustules) caused by rosacea.

How can you help?
