Superficial spider veins

Superficial spider veins are blood vessels that run close to the skin’s surface and look like spider webs. Unlike the white webs made by spiders, superficial spider veins are wisps and webs of purple. This purple color is made by the blood inside the vessels, blood with little oxygen in it.

Superficial spider veins are easily visible because they are darker than the surrounding skin and so close to the skin’s surface. The fact that superficial spider veins run so close to the surface of the skin is a curse and a blessing. The curse is that that they are not aesthetically pleasing. The blessing is that they can be treated with laser therapy.

Superficial spider veins can occur virtually anywhere on the body, but the legs and face are the most common locations. People who are particularly susceptible to spider veins in the lower legs such as pregnant women or those with a family history of varicose veins, may be able to delay or minimize the risk of developing spider veins by wearing compression stockings. This may be especially helpful in people who spent a long time standing during the day or get little exercise. Unfortunately, there is no known preventative therapy for superficial spider veins on the face.

The two major medical treatments for spider veins are sclerotherapy and laser therapy. Sclerotherapy is the process of injecting chemicals into the vein to destroy the vein. It is not always effective for spider veins and may cause severe side effects. Indeed, sclerotherapy is generally better for larger, varicose veins.

On the other hand, laser therapy is highly effective for tiny spider veins on the body and especially superficial spider veins on the face. A specific wavelength of light is used to target hemoglobin, which is found in red blood cells. The laser heats the blood vessel and destroys it, while leaving the surrounding tissue relatively unaffected.

The professionals at Bella Sana use the Cutera XEO system to treat superficial spider veins (telangiectasias). The Cutera XEO system uses a specific wavelength of light to target and destroy small blood vessels near the surface of the skin. Cutera XEO is appropriate for use in people of all skin tones—some laser systems are not powerful enough to treat darker-skinned individuals. Despite the power of the Cutera XEO system, the procedure is pain-free.

is an advanced cosmetic laser system that can painlessly treat most forms of rosacea. In the hands of a skilled medical professional, Cutera XEO can specifically target and remove visible small blood vessels. Patients may see substantial improvements in facial redness after Cutera XEO laser treatment. Laser treatment may also reduce the appearance of acne-like rosacea eruptions.
