How does IPL work for pigmentation?

Healthy skin with an even and radiant tone is the primary sign of youth. However, with age or under the influence of external factors, many face such an annoying problem as pigmentation - the appearance of dark spots on the skin that are difficult to hide even with heavy makeup.

Pigmentation is an excessive accumulation of melanin in certain areas of the skin. The reasons for its appearance are due to many factors: from aggressive exposure to ultraviolet rays and age-related changes to hormonal fluctuations (for example, melasma during pregnancy) and post-acne marks.

As a rule, ordinary whitening creams and serums do not solve the problem and do not provide the desired result. This is precisely why the IPL procedure for skin pigmentation has become one of the most popular methods in aesthetic cosmetology today. It helps to safely and effectively lighten spots, even out skin tone, and restore its freshness and clarity without damaging the surrounding tissues.

What is the IPL Procedure?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, a technology that is successfully used to correct various aesthetic skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation.

Unlike ordinary traditional lasers, the IPL laser procedure for pigmentation does not use a single wavelength. It works with a wide spectrum of light waves of various lengths, which allows it to target several skin problems at once.

What are the main differences between IPL and a traditional laser?

  • Color coverage capabilities. The principle of a classic laser is based on the impact of a focused beam of a single wavelength (a beam of one color). In contrast, IPL is a powerful flash of light, similar to a photo flash, which includes a whole range of wavelengths. This allows the device to simultaneously affect both pigment (melanin) and blood vessels (hemoglobin).
  • Depth and gentleness of impact. Thanks to the ability to adjust filters, IPL acts more gently, which makes the procedure less invasive and reduces the recovery period.
  • Treatment area. The light "spot" of the IPL handpiece is usually larger than that of a laser beam, which allows for faster treatment of large areas such as the face, décolleté, or hands.

At the Bella Sana clinic, we use expert-class equipment that allows for the most precise adjustment of flash parameters for a specific skin phototype.

How Does IPL Work for Pigmentation?

The IPL procedure for skin pigmentation works on the principle of selective impact of a light pulse (selective photothermolysis) on specific skin structures. Light energy is absorbed only by the targets (chromophores) without affecting healthy skin.

How does the destruction of pigment occur?

  • The device generates high-intensity flashes of light.
  • The light flux passes through the epidermis without damaging its surface.
  • The melanin contained in the dark spot "attracts" the light energy.
  • Light energy is instantly converted into thermal energy. The pigment heats up to a critical temperature and breaks down into microscopic particles.
  • The destroyed melanin is pushed to the surface of the skin with subsequent exfoliation.

What happens after the procedure? Immediately after the session, you will notice a characteristic reaction: the pigment spots darken. This is a normal reaction, meaning that the melanin has absorbed the energy. Over the next 7-10 days, the treated areas will gradually exfoliate, revealing light, renewed, and healthy skin underneath.

What Types of Pigmentation Can IPL Treat?

The IPL procedure for pigmentation works effectively with various types of hyperpigmentation, improving skin condition while stimulating collagen production.

Main types:

  • Solar lentigo: the formation of brown spots due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light.
  • Age-related pigmentation: spots appearing with age on the face and hands.
  • Ephelides (freckles): If you want to make them less noticeable or remove them completely.
  • Melasma and chloasma: pigmentation caused by hormonal imbalance (requires prior consultation).
  • Post-acne: lingering brown or reddish spots left after acne treatment.
  • Uneven skin tone: when there are no distinct spots on the face, but the overall color looks dull and "dirty."

What Results Can You Expect from IPL Treatment?

The result of the therapy depends on the depth of the pigment and the individual characteristics of the body.

Effect after the first procedure. Already after the first session, a noticeable lightening of surface spots is observed. The face tone becomes more uniform, and pores become less noticeable.

Result after a full course. To achieve a maximum and lasting result, a course of 3-5 procedures with an interval of 3-4 weeks is usually required. After completing the course, you receive:

  • Complete or significant (up to 90%) disappearance of pigment spots.
  • A "photorejuvenation" effect: the skin becomes more firm and radiant.
  • Disappearance of fine vascular networks that often accompany pigmentation.

Side effects of IPL for hyperpigmentation may manifest as slight swelling and redness. Usually, they pass within a few days and are part of the normal recovery process. To minimize their appearance, it is necessary to strictly follow the specialist's recommendations: use SPF 50+ sunscreen and avoid active sun for a month after the procedure.

If you are concerned about dark spots and uneven skin tone, then an effective and safe IPL procedure is accurately what you need. Today, modern technologies allow for a noticeable result without long-term rehabilitation.
