What is pigmentation?

The human body contains a separate pigment (melanin) that is responsible for skin color. It is located in different layers of the epidermis. When due to some reasons there is excessive synthesis and accumulation of melanin in the superficial layers of the epidermis, melanin is unevenly distributed on the skin and the formation of pigmentation occurs - in the form of small spots, freckles or moles.

The color of pigmentation can range from light yellow to brown. Many owners of pigmentation spots feel uncomfortable and insecure when they appear. Such a defect can appear on the skin of any type - and at a young age, and in 50 +. But most often, pigmentation occurs in people over 35 years old.

Common causes of pigmentation

There are many factors, both external and internal, that contribute to the appearance of age spots. Let's take a look at the most common ones.

External factors

  • Constant exposure to ultraviolet light.
  • Skin trauma: burns, insect bites, cuts, acne, chronic furunculosis.
  • Improper skin care: poor skin cleansing, insufficient moisturizing, use of aggressive or low-quality cosmetics.

Internal factors

  • Hormonal imbalance: during pregnancy, after childbirth, during menopause, when taking hormonal contraceptives and thyroid diseases.
  • Age period: after 40 to 50 years.
  • Medications: prolonged, uncontrolled use of antibiotics or diuretics (increases skin sensitivity to the sun).
  • Background diseases: problems with kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract.
  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies: especially vitamins E and C.
  • Genetic factor: hereditary predisposition.

Types of pigmentation

Pigmentation is able to manifest itself in different types, which have their own characteristics and causes of development.

The main types

  • Melasma: occurs in women during: hormonal changes. It appears as large dark spots on the forehead, cheeks, around the mouth or chin. This type of pigmentation is resistant to treatment and requires a comprehensive approach, including the use of specialized treatments and sunscreen.
  • Freckles: small light or dark brown spots formed on exposed areas of the body (shoulders, face, hands) as a result of exposure of the skin to ultraviolet light. This type of pigmentation is especially prone to people with a light skin type. Although the cause of freckles may be genetic predisposition, their number and intensity of coloration may increase with regular exposure to the sun.
  • Hyperpigmentation: this is a completely different type of pigmentation. Excess melanin deposition occurs in the lowest layers of the epidermis. It may appear in response to trauma, injury or inflammation of the skin, leaving dark brown patches in their place. This type of pigmentation can be persistent, and laser treatment or professional peels are often used to treat it.
  • Sun damage: known as “sun or age spots”. They appear on the face, hands, arms, chest and other areas exposed to prolonged sun exposure. As we age, “sunspots” tend to become more noticeable and, if left untreated, can persist throughout life. Professional procedures, such as laser removal, can help lighten such spots significantly or remove them completely.

Each of these types of pigmentation requires an individualized approach to treatment and prevention to help achieve a more even and healthy skin tone.

Treatment Options Pigmentations

Bella Sana Med Spa in Chicago offers state-of-the-art age spot removal techniques that effectively eliminate sun damage, age spots, freckles, and even pigmentation on the lips.

1. Clear Lift laser therapy: is an innovative procedure that helps to get rid of age spots painlessly and without damaging the top layer of the skin. The principle of action is based on the use of a non-ablative laser that penetrates deeply into the skin, destroying excessive concentration of melanin. Laser treatment is effective in removing melasma, age spots and hyperpigmentation. It is safe for all skin types, leaves no visible damage, and does not require long-term recovery.

As a result of laser treatment of dark spots, they gradually lighten, the skin acquires a more even tone and fresh appearance.

2. Photorejuvenation - the method is based on the impact of intense pulsed light, which helps to cope with pigment spots provoked by external factors (sun, age, etc.). The principle of work is based on the penetration of light pulses into the skin and heating of pigment, which contributes to its destruction. This is a multifunctional, safe and effective method.

Photo rejuvenation procedure reduces the visibility of dark spots, freckles and sun damage, prevents their reappearance, and helps to eliminate vascular defects. It is characterized by ease of performance and long-lasting effect.

Preventing Hyperpigmentation

Prevention of hyperpigmentation is an investment in the beauty and health of your skin. It is as important as the treatment itself, as it helps to minimize the impact of provoking factors, allows you to maintain the results of treatments and prolong their effect.

Many of the factors that cause hyperpigmentation can be controlled. For example, by protecting your skin from the sun and trauma, you significantly reduce the risk of pigment spots. Regular skin care, proper diet and hormonal control will help keep your skin healthy and prevent irritations that can trigger pigmentation.

Preventing hyperpigmentation helps to avoid recurrence and maintain the results achieved, making the skin more resistant to external and internal factors that can affect its tone and health.
