Medical Pedicure

Perhaps you have been told that a regular pedicure from a nail salon isn’t suitable for you, and you need to find a medical pedicure in Chicago instead. So what are they, and what makes them different from a regular treatment?

What is a medical pedicure?

A medical pedicure treatment, medi-pedi or podiatrist and pedicure, differs in that it is performed by an experienced podiatrist or technician, for people with certain medical conditions. Your therapist can treat painful, thick or otherwise deformed toenails, as well as corns, infections and calluses.

It is not like a salon treatment where it’s all about relaxation or making your toenails look glamorous, but many people do find it to be a relaxing experience.

Indications for a medical pedicure

You may be looking for a medical pedicure in Chicago for a number of reasons:

  • Diabetes – only receive a medi-pedi. Salon treatments can increase your risk of infection and amputation.
  • Rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis, as the joints can become deformed and painful to move.
  • Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease
  • HIV/AIDS, in order to reduce infection risk
  • Poor circulation, which impairs wound healing and the immune response
  • Elderly people, as aging compromises circulation, nervous system function and joints.

How is a medical pedicure performed?

A medi-pedi is like your standard salon treatment, but more individualized for certain healthcare needs. Each treatment session starts with an examination of your feet for warts, infections, calluses or other issues that need addressing.

Then, you get to relax with a foot soak like many other pedicure treatments, but your feet are sterilized with alcohol afterwards. Your podiatrist trims, cleans and files your toenails with specific tools and techniques to keep your feet fresh and healthy, while minimizing the risk of infection. Exfoliation and your custom treatment plan, such as the treatment of fungal infections, then follow.

Afterwards, your treatment ends with a massage using moisturizing cream or lotion.

Benefits of the procedure

  • Custom treatment to fit your unique needs. The focus is entirely on you, not a standardized approach.
  • You still get to feel pampered, even though your feet need special medical attention.
  • More hygienic, with sterile instruments to keep you safe if you are at a higher risk of infection.
  • Peace of mind if joint or neurological conditions make it more difficult to care for your feet.

FAQ

How often you need a medical pedicure depends on whether you have a medical problem. For example, if you have fungal nail infections and mycosis of the skin of the feet, you should have a pedicure every 1–2 weeks. If you have ingrown toenails or calluses, the podologist will prescribe an individual course of procedures in each case.

For the first two days: refrain from wearing tight shoes and high-heeled shoes. These can cause discomfort and skin irritation; do not walk barefoot in public places. To avoid the risk of fungal infection; avoid swimming pools, hot tubs and saunas; apply a moisturizing cream to your feet twice a day. Over the next week Continue to apply moisturizer to your feet twice a day. Wash your feet gently with warm water and mild soap. Avoid scrubbing your feet and rubbing them vigorously. When trimming your nails, only trim them to an even shape; Do not use products containing formaldehyde to remove nail polish. If you follow these recommendations, in tandem with a healthy diet and regular foot exercises, you will keep your feet beautiful and healthy.

If you entrust a medical pedicure to a qualified professional - the procedure is quite safe. However, it can carry certain risks: some people may experience an allergic reaction to products used during the session, such as creams or lotions; people with sensitive skin may experience irritation after the procedure.

On average, a medical pedicure lasts about an hour. But its duration may vary depending on certain factors. For example, if you have podiatric problems such as ingrown toenails, calluses or nail fungus, the procedure may take longer.

The goal of a medical pedicure is to improve the health of your feet, not to cause you pain. Clients may experience only mild discomfort in the form of burning or tingling during the procedure, and only if they have foot health issues such as ingrown toenails, calluses, or nail fungus. Our experienced professionals know how to manage the process in a way that minimizes discomfort.
