Hyperpigmentation

There are a number of reasons why clients seek hyperpigmentation treatment in Chicago, in particular clients with darker skin and older adults with age spots. Hyperpigmentation is when a patch of skin is significantly darker than what is normal for you. It is different to a freckle or mole, which are more raised and localized.

Causes of Hyperpigmentation

There are many potential causes of hyperpigmentation, including:

  • Acne
  • Burns of any origin
  • Injuries to the skin
  • The aging process

Methods for dealing with age spots

Hyperpigmentation treatment, for inflammation and age spots, has several key treatment options.

IPL Pigmentation Treatment

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment for pigmentation involves specific wavelengths of laser light that match pigments in your affected area. In the case of hyperpigmentation, the IPL laser is set to target excessive build-up of melanin, the dark pigment that gives your skin color. This “match” means your unwanted melanin absorbs the powerful laser light, which destroys it without damaging your skin or its ability to produce your normal level of melanin.

The benefits of IPL for pigmentation are:

  • Long-term removal of unwanted discoloration
  • No scarring
  • Low side effect profile

Microneedling for pigmentation

Bella Sana Med Spa also offers microneedling for some cases of hyperpigmentation. Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure where tiny needles penetrate the upper layers of your skin, which triggers rejuvenation. Research suggests that it is an effective way to reduce unwanted pigment through providing a “reset” to your regenerative capacity.

Chemical peels for pigmentation

In many cases, hyperpigmentation only affects the superficial layers of skin, including age spots. The chemical peels we perform at Bella Sana Med Spa use natural plant acids, which exfoliate old, dead skin cells and trigger rejuvenation. As with microneedling, this increased regeneration may support even, healthy pigmentation. The same chemical peel ingredients indicated for age spots are also effective for wrinkles, so you will likely notice some beneficial “side effects” too.

Prevention of age spots

Age spots are a type of hyperpigmentation that can develop in people of all skin tones. The best way to prevent them is with sun safety practices, such as wearing sunscreen every time you go outside. Avoid the sun between 10am and 4pm if possible, or wear long, protective clothing such as hats and long-sleeved shirts.

Excess sun exposure contributes to age spots through increasing oxidative stress. Other ways to relieve oxidative stress include quitting smoking, limiting your alcohol intake, and eating an antioxidant-rich diet. Richly-colored fruits and vegetables, alongside spices and certain herbs, are the best sources of antioxidants.
