Laser Wart Removal

Laser wart removal is a popular treatment to remove warts with lasting results, and without long-term scarring. Warts are benign growths that can appear anywhere on the skin, and are typically the same color. They may have a blood vessel supply or appear to contain tightly packed, finger-like projections if they are flat on top.

They usually disappear without treatment, but can be unsightly, cause discomfort, and spread to others. For this reason, many people seek laser wart removal in Chicago.

Causes of Warts

Subtypes of the human papillomavirus (HPV) cause this problem, with different strains able to affect different areas. There are 100-200 strains of HPV, and all are transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. School-aged children and immunocompromised people are more likely to develop warts.

You may have been vaccinated against HPV to prevent cervical cancer (among several others), and are surprised that you still have warts. However, these vaccines do not cover strains that infect your skin.

Wart Types

There are several types of them, categorized by their appearance and where they can be found on the body. The three most common are:

Common warts: These are small, raised growths with rough surfaces and a round or oval shape. You will notice tiny black dots on the surface, which are actually blood vessels. This type is usually found on the hands, but can develop anywhere except the genitals.

Flat warts: More common in children, they develop in clusters of 20-200 individual warts. This is unlike common warts, which are usually singular. They are the size of pin heads and may be pink, yellow, or brown.

Plantar warts: These only develop on the soles of your feet, hence their name. They are usually flat and grow outwards, but can cause discomfort when you stand or walk, especially at larger sizes.

Warts Laser Treatment

Laser treatment for warts works by focusing a light frequency that matches their pigmentation. This pigment then absorbs the laser light, overheats, and the unwanted tissue is destroyed.

Laser therapy is the best way to ensure that the problem won’t return, and today they are more precise than other interventions. There are several types of laser, which are used to remove warts and other skin problems:

  1. Erbium: Yttrium/Aluminum/Garnet (YAG) laser: This is one of the most precise lasers, able to heat small, targeted areas.
  2. Neodymium: YAG laser: This is both precise and deep, and generally used to target blood vessels in the warts.
  3. Pulsed-dye laser: The most common type used for warts, this focuses on destroying their blood vessels, and possibly the HPV infection.

CO2 laser: These burn off the entire wart and have a higher risk of scarring.
